Foreign Language Teaching &Research Press is to be congratulated on its initaiative in making these publications in linguistics available to foreign language teachers and postgraduate students of linguistics in China.

The books are a representative selection of up-to-date writings on the most important branches of linguistic studies, by scholars who are recognized as leading authorities in their fields.

The availability of such a broad range of materials in linguistics will greatly help individual teachers and students to build up their own knowledge and understanding of the subject.

At the same time, it will also contribute to the development of linguistics as a discipline in Chinese universities and colleges, helping to overcome the divisions into "English linguistics", "Chinese linguistics" and so on which hinder the progress of linguistics as a unified science.

The series is to be highly commended for what it offers to all those wanting to gai insight into the nature of language, whether from a theoretical point of view of in application to their professional activities as language teachers.

It is being launched at a time when there are increasing opportunities in Cina for pursuing linguisitc studies, and I am confident that it will succeed in meeting these new requirements.

Knowledge of Language: Its Nature, Origin, and Use》
'This is an excellent contribution to the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind...the best available introduction to Chomsky'scurrent ideas on syntax made accessible to the non-specialist.'

Julius M. Moravcxik, Standford University
'Why do we know so much more than we have evidence for in certain areas, and so much less in others? In tacking these question - Plato's problem and Orwell's problem - Chomsky again demonstrates his unequalled capacity to integrate vast amounts of material... a clear introduction to current thinking on grammatical theory.'

David W. Lightfoot, University of Maryland

Linguistic Categorization: Prototypes in Linguistic Theory》

Modern Lexicography:An Introduction》

This book explores the far-reaching implications of Eleanor Rosch's seminal work on categoriation and prototype theory, extending theapplication of prototype theory from lexical semantics to morphology, syntax, and phonology.

It provides a readable and clearly articulated introduction to the field of Cognitive Linguistics.

For the second edition John Taylor has added a further chapter which updates the book, particularly in its treatment of lexical semantics.

Course in General Linguistics》
The Course in General Linguistics not only laid the foundations of modern linguistic theory, but also established at the same time a general science of signs: semiology.

It opened up new perspectives in the analysis of human communication of all kinds. Its basic ideas were later developed in the study of art, literature, philosophy and social anthropology.

This new translation pays careful attention to the terminological difficulties which have often puzzled or misled English students of Saussure.

It presents the complete text of the Course in General Linguistics, with an introducion and explanatory notes for the guidance of the general reader who is not a specialist in linguistics but who wishes to make his own assessment of a work which stands as one of the intellectual landmarks in modern thought.
